Quantifying Septic Nitrogen Loadings to Receiving Waters: Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Waquoit Bay, a shallow bay on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is exhibiting symptoms of eutrophication, largely attributed to septic nitrogen inputs. This study assessed septic nitrogen inputs by linking a three-dimensional ground-water model, a geographic information system (GIS), and a customized spatio-temporal nitrogen loading program. Owing to the slow speed of ground-water movement, the bulk of septic nitrogen entering the bay lags behind development by nearly a decade. Even if residential development is held at 1989 levels, nitrogen input from septic systems will increase by 36% over the current levels. At ful l residential build-out (i.e., development), septic nitrogen loading will eventually increase to more than twice the current levels.

Nitrogen Loading from Coastal Watersheds to Receiving Estuaries: New Method and Application
In this paper we develop a model to estimate nitrogen loading to watersheds and receiving waters, and then apply the model to gain insight about sources, losses, and transport of nitrogen in groundwater moving through a coastal watershed. The model is developed from data of the Waquoit Bay Land Margin Ecosystems Research project (WBLMER), and from syntheses of published information. The WBLMER ...
متن کاملQuantifying Eelgrass Habitat Loss in Relation to Housing Development and Nitrogen Loading in Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts
Change analysis of eelgrass distribution in Waquoit Bay demonstrated a rapid decline of eelgrass habitat between 1987 and 1992. Aerial photography and ground-truth assessments of eelgrass distribution in the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve documented progressive loss in eelgrass acreage and fragmentation of eelgrass beds that we relate to the degree of housing development and as...
متن کاملEcology: Impact of Nutrient Loading on Estuaries and Marshes
Childs River and Quashnet River, combined with the absence of such spikes at Sage Lot and Flat Ponds, suggests input by plumes from septic tanks. Mean NI&+ concentration in groundwater varied over a relatively small range across the three sites (Fig. 1, middle panels). NH4+ contributed less than 5% of the mean dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) at Childs and Quashnet Rivers. Most of the inorgan...
متن کاملNitrogen Loads to Estuaries: Using Loading Models to Assess the Effectiveness of Management Options to Restore Estuarine Water Quality
Nitrogen (N) loading to estuaries has become a major concern for coastal planners. As urban development on coastal watershed continues, estuaries and bays are becoming more eutrophic, and cascading effects are being felt at every trophic level. Managers and stakeholders need to have a suite of effective management tools that can be applied to coastal watersheds to minimize the effects of eutrop...
متن کاملEelgrass Zostera marina loss in temperate estuaries: relationship to land-derived nitrogen loads and effect of light limitation imposed by algae
In this paper, we explicitly link changes in community structure of estuarine primary producers to measured nitrogen loading rates from watersheds to estuaries, and quantify the relationship between nitrogen load, annual dynamics of algal growth and Zostera marina L. productivity, and overall eelgrass decline at the watershed-estuarine scale in estuaries of Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts, USA. Subs...
